Methanol, also known as hydroxymethane, wood alcohol, or wood spirits, is an organic compound and the simplest form of saturated monohydric alcohol with the chemical formula CH3OH/CH4O. It has a molecular weight of 32.04 and a boiling point of 64.7°C. The names "wood alcohol" and "wood spirits" originate from its historical production method, which involved extracting it from wood distillation or pyrolysis products. Modern methanol is manufactured directly from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen through a catalytic industrial process. Methanol is light, highly volatile, colorless, flammable, and has a smell similar to ethanol (drinking alcohol). However, unlike ethanol, methanol is highly toxic and not suitable for consumption. It is commonly used as a solvent, antifreeze, fuel, or as a denaturant for ethanol, and it can also be used in the production of biodiesel through transesterification.

It also serves as a raw material for pesticides (insecticides, acaricides) and pharmaceuticals (sulfonamides, antibiotics, etc.). Additionally, it is a raw material for the synthesis of dimethyl terephthalate, methyl methacrylate, and acrylic acid methyl ester. Methanol is also an important solvent and can be blended with gasoline as an alternative fuel.

3. Usage Precautions:
